Statistical design within study design
Statistical expertise is required for sample size calculation. But alsofor the data analysis itself. There are many other elements that go into the statistical design of a study. Statistical design is the result of translating a hypothesis into the design of the study with appropriate methods for subsequent analysis. Identifying and accounting for sources of variation (both random and systematic) will provide the maximum amount of information. A statistical design may also include:
- the number and allocation of test groups
- randomization
- the minimum effect of interest
- procedures to ensure basic data quality, etc.
A proper statistical design is essential to ensure that the data will be of sufficient quality to allow to use them in a decision-making process in the presence of uncertainty.
